I Need More Adventure

I was talking to a friend this morning…well, more writing to a friend than talking, I suppose. She read my last couple of posts and suggested I find something to do that required concentration and focus. Something, I suppose, that would distract me from my memories of what happened last year around this time. Her advice is sage.

IMG_20170212_181324This is what DJ wrote on our home calendar last June for the day we were scheduled to go look at the motorhome we wanted to buy. I almost erased it because we weren’t going to look at a trailer (I’m picky like that) but I left it because I thought, “well…she’s getting excited about getting the RV” and that was important to me.

And, it was going to be an adventure, wasn’t it?! We were going to cram ourselves into a 25′ rectangle of space and see the U.S.! We were going to visit Presidential Libraries! We were going to spend nights on the beach!

We liked the RV. It would be a tight fit (DJ was not a dainty woman) with both of us and both dogs, but we were looking forward to it. We decided to buy the motorhome we test drove that day. We were to go back the following weekend to pick it up but that was the first weekend DJ felt sick so she didn’t go with me. The following week, she felt better and I reserved a campsite for us to take the motorhome on its maiden voyage.

I came home on Monday after work and found DJ sitting in her recliner with her mini iPad. She had barely told me hello when she announced that she had found the Camping World website. She was so excited to be shopping for camping stuff. It was like a whole, new world to her. The next day, she came home with bags full of sheets, pillows, bedspreads, and other things for the motorhome. I was thrilled that she was excited and looking forward to our camping trip.

Then, she fell ill again, went into hospital, and never came out. I still have this calendar hanging on my pantry door. I haven’t moved it, nor have I erased DJ’s message of adventure. I kept her iPad exactly the way she left it…full of open tabs from the places she loved to shop…especially the tab for Camping World.

I used the RV for several months but finally decided it was too large and it held too much promise of what our future was to be like so I sold it and bought a smaller RV for myself.

I have been dealing with mom and aunt issues so I haven’t had a chance to go out in a couple of months but I know my friend is right. I need to find something to focus on that will help me get out of my head. And Djamila was right, as well. Everything we do, every place we go, should be an adventure, shouldn’t it? At least, that was what Djamila thought and maybe, she was right.

I enjoy reading and have blogged in the past about travel and books. My latest blog is a vanity blog. I write about whatever comes to mind, specifically, things I think I need in life. Hope you enjoy!

  1. So sorry, Monica. It makes me so sad to hear how things progressed–so full of hope and excitement and then cut short. I admire your strength and courage. You’ve always been an adventurous one. DJ would want for you to fulfill your dreams, bittersweet though it may seem.

    • Thanks Jess. It really was an exciting time even if it didn’t last long. At least I know she was finally looking forward to camping! I never thought I’d see that happen. Thanks again for stopping by.
